12th CBSE English subject is divided into core and elective. The syllabus set by NCERT and CBSE board is a standardized one guiding through the hours, allocation of marks and details of each individual lesson. The content written here will describe the English core.
Section A- Reading Comprehension: 20 Marks
This section containstwo passages. One unseen passage with a variety of Objective Type Questions, including Multiple Choice questions and Short Answer Questions to test comprehension, interpretation and inference. Vocabulary such as word formation and inference of meaning will also be tested. The passage comes with a length of 800 - 900 words. The passage is for a total of 12 marks (Five Multiple Choice type question and Seven Objective Type Questions. Different types of passages under unseen passages is
Descriptive passages involving opinion, e.g., argumentative, persuasive or interpretative text.
Literary passages, e.g., extract from fiction, drama, poetry, essay or biography.
In the 2nd passage will have around 400-500 words to assess note-making and abstraction .Note making is for 4 Marks and abstraction with a summary is for 4 Marks.
Section B-Writing Skills :30 Marks
This section will test the students through Advertisements and notices, designing or drafting posters, writing formal/ informal invitations and replies. One question out of the two Short Answer Questions– 4 Marks. The other part of writing skills is , Letters based on verbal / visual input. There will be 2 questions but student need to answer anyone with at least 120-150 words for 6 Marks. Letter types include- Business or official letters (for making enquiries, registering complaints, asking for and giving information, placing orders and sending replies) and the other type is Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest) Application for a job. There are also 2 compositions based on visual and/or verbal Input which may be descriptive or argumentative in nature such as an article/a debate/ a speech or a report. These compositions will have 2 Very Long Answer Questions containing internal choice, to be answered in 150-200 words. (10x2=20 Marks)
Section C- Literature from Textbooks for 30 Marks
Questions from the prescribed books as follows.
Flamingo and Vistas
Eight Objective Type Questions – 4 from one poetry and 4 from one prose extract to test comprehension and appreciation. (8x1=8 Marks).
Five out of Seven Short Answer Questions based on prose / drama / poetry from both texts (5x2=10 Marks).
One out of two Long Answer Questions to be answered in 120-150 words to test global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the texts. (6marks) (Flamingo).
One out of two Long Answer Questions to be answered in 120-150 words to test global comprehension along with analysis and extrapolation. (6marks) (Vistas)
